Captured by Jill Furmanovsky, this iconic photograph shows David Gilmour playing his legendary ‘Black Strat’ with Pink Floyd at London’s Rainbow Theatre on 4 November 1973.
As Christie’s London has noted, Gilmour’s 1969 black Fender Stratocaster holds a special place in rock ’n’ roll history. Purchased in 1970 at Manny’s on West 48th Street in New York, it became his most recognisable instrument and a defining part of Pink Floyd’s sound.
The Black Strat was Gilmour’s primary recording and performance guitar between 1970 and 1986. It featured on landmark albums including The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979), helping to shape unforgettable tracks such as ‘Money’, ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Comfortably Numb’.
Extensively modified over the years to suit Gilmour’s evolving style, the guitar also featured on his solo albums David Gilmour (1978), About Face (1984), On an Island (2006) and Rattle That Lock (2015).
